(Mostly) Useless Facts #1

We have all seen the puff of smoke that arises from an airplanes wheels when it touches the runway at 100 mph or more. This violent interaction between the plane’s wheels and the runway tarmac leaves 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of rubber on the runway from each wheel! A busy airport would have over 10,000 pounds of rubber left behind each day, making the runway more slippery (and less safe) and also covering the runway lights. Who knew?
